Therkelsen Strike Earns Holstein Kiel Narrow Win at Hertha
Holstein Kiel strengthened their 2. Bundesliga campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to Hertha BSC on Matchday 31, decided by a second-half goal from substitute Jonas Therkelsen.
The match in Berlin was cagey from the outset, with both sides committing early fouls that set a physical tone. Hertha midfielders Mickaël Cuisance and Deyovaisio Zeefuik were booked inside the opening 10 minutes, underlining the home side’s combative approach. Kiel responded in kind, as Lasse Rosenboom and Jonas Meffert also went into the referee’s book before half-time, while Paul Seguin picked up another yellow for Hertha.
The key moment arrived in the 63rd minute. Having been introduced at the break for Ikem Ugoh, Therkelsen made his impact count by putting Kiel in front. The forward finished a move created by Phil Harres, who provided the assist, to give the visitors a 1–0 lead that would ultimately prove decisive.
Hertha attempted to change the course of the game with a series of substitutions, bringing on Dawid Kownacki for Jan Luca Schuler just after the hour mark, followed later by Julian Eitschberger and Maurice Krattenmacher. However, the hosts could not find a way past the Kiel defence. Frustration showed in further bookings for Fabian Reese and additional yellow cards for Kiel’s Ivan Nekić and Umut Tohumcu.
Holstein Kiel managed the closing stages well, making late changes including Niklas Niehoff and Marcus Muller for attacking outlets Adrián Kaprálik and Harres, before introducing Stefan Schwab and Frederik Roslyng in stoppage time to help see out the result.
Hertha BSC were left to rue their inability to convert pressure into goals, while Kiel made the most of their key moment to take all three points. Detailed statistics such as possession, shots, and attendance were not available at the time of writing.
