Former Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has suggested Robert Lewandowski should consider a surprise move to Wrexham as the striker prepares for life after Barcelona.

Lewandowski is expected to leave Catalunya this summer, bringing an end to a successful spell with the La Liga giants. The 37-year-old has already hinted that he could be open to a new challenge in a less demanding league, admitting that he is approaching the stage of his career where enjoyment matters as much as competition.

“There could be an option in a lower league,” Lewandowski said. “I’m almost 38, but I feel good physically, so I’m considering it. I have to take into account the possibility that it’s time to play and enjoy life. Perhaps that option will arise, and I’m not ruling it out.”

Mendieta believes Wrexham could offer the perfect storybook next step, especially given the club’s global profile under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

“Robert Lewandowski said he is open to taking a step down and if he wants to be an actor after he retires, Wrexham is the place to go!” Mendieta told PlayUK.

The former Spain international admitted that Lewandowski would not be short of options, but warned that English football outside the Premier League can be far more demanding than many expect.

“I don’t think these kinds of players always thrive, especially in the Championship or the Spanish Segunda Division,” Mendieta said. “Very tough leagues for players like him. I think his quality and ability can still provide something. I don’t think he will be short of options, so let’s see what happens. But it would be exciting.”

Lewandowski’s expected exit also raises a major question for Barcelona. Who replaces one of the most reliable goalscorers of his generation?

For Mendieta, the dream answer is Harry Kane. The Bayern Munich striker was signed as Lewandowski’s successor in Germany in 2023, but Mendieta believes he would also be a thrilling fit at the Camp Nou.

“I would love to see Harry Kane at Barcelona, in La Liga,” he said. “He’s a fantastic player. Why not? We saw Robert Lewandowski arrive, nobody thought he would come to Barca, but he did.”

Mendieta also suggested that Barcelona’s improving financial position and recent success could help them attract major names again. He believes the pull of the club remains powerful enough to convince elite players to prioritise trophies and prestige over higher salaries elsewhere.

For now, Lewandowski’s next destination remains uncertain. But Mendieta’s Wrexham suggestion has added a surprising twist to the debate, while his Kane comments are sure to excite Barcelona fans dreaming of another superstar striker arriving in Spain.
