Ruben Amorim could be set for a return to management, with Benfica reportedly considering him as their preferred candidate to replace Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach has been out of work since being dismissed by Manchester United in January after a difficult spell at Old Trafford. Although his time in England did not go as planned, Amorim remains highly regarded in Portugal because of the success he previously enjoyed with Sporting CP.

According to The Sun, Benfica are preparing for a possible managerial change, with Mourinho expected to leave the club amid reports linking him with a return to Real Madrid.

That situation has opened the door for Amorim to rebuild his reputation back home. Benfica are said to view the 41-year-old as the leading option to take charge at Estadio da Luz ahead of next season.

For Amorim, the opportunity would be significant. His spell at Manchester United damaged some of the momentum he had built earlier in his career, but a move to Benfica would place him back in a familiar football environment where his methods are already respected.

His previous work at Sporting made him one of the most admired young coaches in Europe. He delivered success, developed players and built a clear tactical identity, which is why Benfica appear willing to look beyond his struggles in the Premier League.

If Mourinho completes his expected move to Real Madrid, Benfica could move quickly to secure their next manager. Amorim’s return would also add another layer of intrigue to Portuguese football, given his strong connection with Sporting.

For now, no final agreement has been announced, but Amorim is firmly in the frame. After a painful Manchester United chapter, Benfica may offer him the perfect chance to start again.
