Salah accused of selfish timing after Liverpool criticism

Jamie Carragher has criticised Mohamed Salah after the Liverpool forward appeared to question the club’s direction following their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.

Salah sparked debate with a public message calling for Liverpool to return to the bold attacking style that defined their best years under Jurgen Klopp. Many supporters and pundits interpreted the post as a criticism of manager Arne Slot and the team’s current identity.

Carragher was not surprised by the controversy and compared the situation to Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive final spell at Manchester United.

“I told everyone: something’s going to happen before the end of the season,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “He’ll drop another bombshell, a bit like Ronaldo did when he left Manchester United. I thought it might wait until after the season, once he’d moved on, but no.”

Carragher accuses Salah of selfish timing

Carragher said Salah’s comments came at the worst possible moment, with Liverpool still fighting to secure Champions League qualification.

“I called him selfish in an interview, and I still believe that,” the former Liverpool defender said. “Liverpool have a crucial week coming up; they haven’t secured their Champions League spot yet, and the focus should be on Liverpool FC, not Salah FC.”

The criticism came after Salah posted a message reflecting on Liverpool’s past success and calling for the team to rediscover its attacking edge.

“I have seen this club transform from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,” Salah wrote. “That took hard work, and I have always done everything I could to help the club achieve that goal. Nothing makes me prouder than that.”

He added: “Losing again hurts and is not what our fans deserve. I hope Liverpool will once more become the bold, attacking side that opponents fear and a team that wins titles.”

Neville says Salah created a major problem

Gary Neville also weighed in, saying Salah’s timing had created a major issue for Slot and the dressing room.

“He pulled the pin out of a grenade right in the middle of the room and is now simply walking out,” Neville said.

The former Manchester United defender argued that no top club would be comfortable with a star player publicly placing pressure on the manager in such a way.

“If he were a Manchester United player, I’d be absolutely furious,” Neville added.

At the same time, Neville admitted that players of Salah’s stature are difficult to control when they decide to speak publicly.

“You can never silence a player of this calibre, with this stature and personality,” he said. “If they have something to say, they will say it, and they will say it when you least want to hear it.”

Liverpool tension grows before decisive week

Salah’s comments have added to the pressure around Liverpool after another damaging result.

The defeat to Aston Villa left questions over Slot’s methods, the squad’s confidence and whether Liverpool’s identity has changed too much since the end of the Klopp era.

Steven Gerrard also suggested that the post pointed to deeper issues inside the dressing room, with the club’s former captain viewing it as a sign that unity may be slipping.

For Carragher, however, the key issue is timing. With Liverpool still needing results to secure Champions League football, he believes the focus should be on the team rather than Salah’s future or frustration.

The situation now leaves Slot facing one of his biggest challenges yet: steadying Liverpool on the pitch while managing a public row involving the club’s biggest star.
