CA Newell’s Old Boys claimed a 3–1 away win over CA Central Córdoba on Sunday night, making the most of an early breakthrough and a costly dismissal for the hosts on Liga Profesional Apertura matchday 13.
The visitors struck first after just 10 minutes, when Franco Garcia opened the scoring to give Newell’s an ideal start. Central Córdoba struggled to settle and their problems deepened midway through the first half with a pair of bookings that shifted the tone of the contest.
Newell’s doubled their advantage in the 40th minute. Oscar Salomón finished a well-worked move, assisted by Jerónimo Russo, to put the Rosario side 2–0 ahead and firmly in control. Just three minutes later, Central Córdoba’s night worsened as Juan Pablo Pignani was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute, leaving the home team to chase the game with 10 men.
To their credit, Central Córdoba responded after the break. In the 64th minute, Diego Barrera pulled one back, finishing from a pass by Michael Santos to make it 2–1 and briefly revive hopes of a comeback.
Newell’s, however, managed the remainder of the match and secured the points deep into stoppage time. Substitute Franscisco Scarpeccio struck in the 90+5th minute, finishing a move created by fellow substitute Luciano Herrera to restore the two-goal cushion at 3–1.
Both coaches relied heavily on their benches, with a flurry of second-half substitutions as Central Córdoba searched for an equaliser and Newell’s sought fresh legs to see out the result.
