Irankunda Cancels Out Godden Strike as Watford and Charlton Share the Points

Watford and Charlton Athletic played out a 1–1 draw on Championship matchday 41, as both sides were forced to settle for a point after trading second-half goals.

Charlton made the key breakthrough on 62 minutes, and it came from the bench. Matt Godden, introduced just a minute earlier for Sonny Carey, quickly justified his manager’s decision by putting the visitors 1–0 up. His strike gave Charlton the advantage heading into the final half-hour.

Watford responded through their own attacking talent. In the 74th minute, Nestor Irankunda levelled the contest, finishing a move created by Imran Louza. The goal restored parity at 1–1 and shifted the momentum towards the hosts as they pushed for a winner.

Both managers turned to their benches throughout the second half. Alongside Godden’s influential entrance, Charlton brought on Joe Rankin-Costello for Luke Chambers on 61 minutes and later introduced Jayden Fevrier for Lyndon Dykes on 81 minutes. Watford, meanwhile, introduced Amin Nabizada for Luca Kjerrumgaard on 63 minutes, Kwadwo Baah for Jérémy Pétris on 72 minutes, and, in an attacking reshuffle on 81 minutes, Tom Ince for goalscorer Irankunda and Vivaldo Semedo for Mamadou Doumbia.

The game also featured several bookings. Charlton’s Greg Docherty and Harry Clarke were shown yellow cards in the first half, on 33 and 38 minutes respectively, while Watford’s Nampalys Mendy was cautioned a minute after Docherty, in the 34th minute. In stoppage time, Watford goalkeeper Egil Selvik also went into the referee’s book.

No further goals followed Irankunda’s equaliser, leaving the sides level at the final whistle. More detailed match statistics and events beyond goals, bookings, and substitutions were not available at the time of writing.
