Grillitsch Strike and Cucho Penalty Leave Braga–Betis Europa Tie in the Balance

Sporting Clube de Braga and Real Betis Balompié will head to Seville level after a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final on Wednesday.

The Portuguese side made a dream start, taking the lead after just five minutes. Florian Grillitsch struck for Braga, finishing off a move created by Diego Rodrigues to put the hosts 1–0 up and ignite the home crowd.

The opening stages were combative, with Real Betis midfielder Sofyan Amrabat booked in the 11th minute and Braga defender Sikou Niakaté cautioned shortly after on 23 minutes. Braga were forced into an early change when creator Diego Rodrigues made way for João Moutinho in the 18th minute.

Betis adjusted at the break, introducing Antony for Amrabat, and their pressure eventually told. In the 61st minute, the visitors earned a penalty, which Cucho Hernández converted to level the tie at 1–1. The equaliser came just after a spate of cards, with Marc Roca and Jean-Baptiste Gorby both cautioned around the hour mark.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a late winner. Betis refreshed their midfield with Sergi Altimira and Nelson Deossa on 63 minutes, while Rodrigo Riquelme and later Ezequiel Ávila joined the attack. Braga responded by introducing Fran Navarro and Mario Dorgeles in the 77th minute, before Demir Tiknaz and Moscardo came on in the 84th minute as Grillitsch and Pau Victor Delgado departed.

Defender Natan picked up a yellow card for Betis on 67 minutes, while Grillitsch was also booked in the 72nd minute, underlining the intensity of the contest. No further goals followed, leaving the quarter-final finely poised ahead of the return leg.
