Columbus Crew See Off Philadelphia Union with Early Strike and Own Goal

Columbus Crew SC secured a controlled 2–0 victory over Philadelphia Union in MLS regular-season action on Matchday 10, building their win on an explosive start and a slice of fortune just before half-time.

Max Arfsten put the hosts in front after only four minutes. The Crew attacker struck early to make it 1–0, giving Columbus the perfect platform in front of their home crowd. The Union struggled to respond, and their frustrations were compounded by a booking for Danley Jean Jacques in the 39th minute.

On the stroke of half-time, misfortune hit Philadelphia again. In the 45th minute plus three of stoppage time, defender Nathan Harriel diverted the ball into his own net, extending Columbus’s lead to 2–0. Moments earlier, Sekou Bangoura had been shown a yellow card for the Crew, but the home side still went into the break with clear control of the scoreline.

The second half saw both coaches turn to their benches. Philadelphia made a double change around the interval, with Jovan Lukic and Ben Bender introduced, and later brought on Indiana Vassilev and Agustin Anello as they chased a way back into the match. Columbus responded with their own rotations, including Steven Moreira, Dániel Gazdag, Jamal Thiaré, Amar Sejdic and Mohamed Farsi coming on to help manage the game and protect the advantage.

The Union’s evening ended on a sour note when Japhet Sery was sent off in the 90th minute, reducing the visitors to ten men and effectively ending any hopes of a late rally.
