Gozo and Luna Fire Real Salt Lake Past Portland Timbers in MLS Matchday 11
Real Salt Lake made the most of a strong first-half performance to defeat the Portland Timbers 2–0 in MLS regular-season play on Matchday 11, with early goals from Zavier Gozo and Diego Luna proving decisive.
The hosts struck first in the 10th minute. Zavier Gozo opened the scoring for Real Salt Lake, finishing a move created by Sergi Solans. Gozo’s early goal settled any nerves and put the home side immediately in control.
Real Salt Lake doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Diego Luna added the second, converting after being set up by Juan Sanabria to make it 2–0. The brace of early goals gave RSL a cushion they never relinquished, and Portland faced an uphill task for the remainder of the match.
Portland Timbers turned to their bench after the break in search of a response. Kamal Miller replaced Finn Surman at half-time, followed by a double change on 59 minutes as Ian Smith came on for Alex Bonetig and Alexander Aravena replaced Cole Bassett. Real Salt Lake answered with their own adjustments, including Philip Quinton coming in for Justen Glad just after the hour mark and late introductions for Victor Olatunji, Zach Booth, Aiden Hezarkhani and Pablo Ruíz.
Discipline played a minor role, with the Timbers collecting two yellow cards. Jimer Fory was booked on 60 minutes, and substitute Ian Smith followed into the referee’s book in the 82nd minute. Real Salt Lake’s Juan Sanabria also received a yellow card in the 85th minute.
Despite the tactical tweaks and late substitution of Kevin Kelsy for Gage Guerra, Portland could not find a way back into the contest, and Real Salt Lake saw out the match to secure the clean sheet and three points.
