The contest, part of the regular season schedule, was finely balanced for over an hour before the breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute. Portsmouth substitute Adrian Segecic, introduced as early as the eighth minute for Keshi Anderson, created the opening, setting up Bowat to make it 1–0. The goal proved enough to separate the sides.
