Banel Strike Keeps Derby County’s Promotion Push on Track Against Oxford United

Derby County edged past Oxford United 1–0 in a tight Championship contest on matchday 43, with Jaydon Banel’s first-half finish proving decisive for the hosts.

The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Banel struck for Derby, giving them an early advantage. The goal came after good work from Samuel Szmodics, who provided the assist before Banel made it 1–0. That strike ultimately separated the sides, as Oxford were unable to find a response.

Derby’s intensity also brought disciplinary moments. David Ozoh received a yellow card in the 26th minute, and late in the second half Szmodics, Oscar Fraulo and Derry Murkin were all booked as the home side dug in to protect their narrow lead.

Oxford United turned to their bench in search of a way back into the game. A double change on 62 minutes saw Jin-woo Jeon replace Jamie Donley and Aidomo Emakhu come on for Myles Peart-Harris. Later, Mark Harris and Will Vaulks were introduced, with Harris replacing Yunus Konak on 84 minutes and Vaulks coming on for Brodie Spencer in the 89th minute. Cameron Brannagan was booked for the visitors on 80 minutes as frustrations grew.

Derby also freshened their side as the match wore on. Fraulo replaced Ozoh on 70 minutes, Sondre Langås came on for Dion Sanderson a minute later, and in the closing stages Max Johnston, Craig Forsyth and Lars-Jørgen Salvesen all entered the fray. Banel made way for Johnston in the 86th minute, while Murkin and Szmodics were withdrawn in stoppage time.

Derby County held firm to secure the 1–0 victory, an important result in the context of their Championship campaign. Detailed statistics, full line-ups and further match events were not available at the time of writing.
