Pep Guardiola has reportedly made the decision to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing his remarkable spell at the Etihad Stadium to a close.
The Catalan coach is now expected to take charge of City for the final time this Sunday, when the Premier League champions face Aston Villa at home.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have already reached an agreement with Guardiola’s replacement. Enzo Maresca is set to become the club’s new manager from next season, with everything reportedly agreed between the two parties.
Maresca’s appointment would mark a return to familiar surroundings. The Italian previously worked inside the City Football Group and managed Manchester City’s under-23 side during the 2020-21 season, gaining valuable experience within the club’s structure.
He has since taken charge of Parma, Leicester City and Chelsea, although his time at Stamford Bridge ended in January when he was dismissed by the London club.
City’s move for Maresca suggests they want continuity after Guardiola’s departure. The 44-year-old understands the possession-based principles and tactical demands associated with the club, making him a natural candidate to continue the work built over recent years.
Guardiola’s exit will still represent a huge moment for Manchester City and English football. During his time at the Etihad, he turned City into one of the most dominant teams in Europe and delivered a trophy-laden era defined by control, innovation and consistency.
Barring a late twist, Maresca will now be handed the responsibility of leading City into a new chapter. For Guardiola, Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa is set to become an emotional farewell after one of the most successful managerial reigns in Premier League history.
