Wright shines as Wigan outclass Northampton 3–1 in League One

Wigan Athletic earned an impressive 3–1 victory away to Northampton Town on matchday 42 of the League One season, with Callum Wright central to the Latics’ success.

The visitors struck first on 15 minutes. Wright finished off a well-worked move, converting after a pass from Matthew Smith to give Wigan an early lead. The goal settled Shaun Maloney’s side, who continued to look the more assured team through the first half.

Northampton’s afternoon worsened in first-half stoppage time. In the 45th minute plus one, defender Jon Guthrie turned the ball into his own net, doubling Wigan’s advantage and sending the Cobblers in at the break 2–0 down.

Home boss Jon Brady reacted with a double change at half-time, introducing Tom Eaves and Tyrese Fornah. Further substitutions on the hour mark gave Northampton more attacking impetus, and the pressure finally told on 80 minutes. Jake Evans pulled a goal back with a regular-time strike, finishing after good work from Kyle McAdam to make it 2–1 and briefly raise hopes of a late comeback.

Those hopes were extinguished eight minutes later. In the 88th minute, Will Aimson struck for Wigan to restore their two-goal cushion and effectively kill the contest, securing all three points for the visitors.

Wigan also picked up two yellow cards, with James Carragher booked early on 14 minutes and Wright cautioned late in the 83rd minute. The Latics managed the closing stages well, using a flurry of late substitutions to see the game out.

The win strengthens Wigan’s position in the League One table as the regular season heads towards its conclusion, while Northampton are left to reflect on a costly own goal and a fightback that came too late. More detailed match statistics and line-ups were not available at the time of writing.
