Charlotte FC claimed a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Philadelphia Union on Saturday, with Wilfried Zaha’s late strike proving decisive in an entertaining MLS matchday 6 clash.
The hosts went in front on 30 minutes when Ashley Westwood finished off a well-worked move. Idan Gorno provided the assist, and the midfielder’s goal gave Charlotte a deserved 1–0 advantage at the interval.
Philadelphia pushed for a response after the break and were rewarded in the 78th minute. Danley Jean Jacques levelled the score, assisted by substitute Cavan Sullivan, to make it 1–1 and briefly silence the home crowd.
Charlotte’s answer was immediate. Just two minutes later, in the 80th minute, Zaha restored the lead with a composed finish, set up by Pep Biel. The quick response swung the momentum back to the home side and ultimately settled the contest at 2–1.
The match was competitive throughout, reflected in a flurry of bookings. Philadelphia saw yellow cards for Frankie Westfield (12′), Bruno Damiani (45′), Nathan Harriel (76′) and Cavan Sullivan (90′). Charlotte’s cautions went to Djibril Diani (19′), Zaha (42′), Morrison Agyemang (83′) and goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina (87′).
Both coaches turned to their benches in the second half. Charlotte introduced Luca de la Torre and Liel Abada on 65 minutes, later bringing on Brandt Bronico and Archie Goodwin in stoppage time. Philadelphia’s changes included Jesus Bueno, Sullivan, Malik Jakupovic, Stas Korzeniowski and Philippe Ndinga as they chased a result.
Detailed statistics beyond goals, cards and substitutions were not available at the time of writing. The win strengthens Charlotte FC’s position in the early MLS regular season, while Philadelphia Union are left to reflect on a missed opportunity after briefly clawing their way back into the game.
