Chelsea have named Joao Pedro as their Player of the Season after the forward dominated the club’s fan vote.
The honour comes only hours after a major disappointment for the Brazilian, who was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the World Cup. That timing gives the award a bittersweet feeling, with Joao Pedro celebrated by Chelsea supporters while missing out on one of his biggest international dreams.
The 24-year-old received more than 60 per cent of the votes in Chelsea’s online poll, finishing well ahead of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, who came second and third.
Debut season impact at Stamford Bridge
Joao Pedro has made a huge impression since joining Chelsea from Brighton in a £60 million move last summer.
His debut campaign has been one of the bright spots of Chelsea’s season. In the Premier League, he has produced 15 goals and eight assists with two matches still to play.
Across all competitions, he has been involved in 29 goals, underlining how quickly he has become one of the most important players in the squad.
His numbers also place him in elite company. Joao Pedro has become only the sixth player in Chelsea history to record 20 Premier League goal involvements in a debut season, joining a group that includes Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Cole Palmer.
Brazil omission brings painful contrast
While Chelsea fans have recognised his outstanding season, Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti made a different call.
Joao Pedro was left out of the final World Cup squad, with Ancelotti instead selecting Neymar despite the Santos forward’s recent injury concerns. The decision surprised many, especially given Joao Pedro’s form at club level.
Speaking after announcing the squad, Ancelotti admitted that some players would inevitably be hurt by the final selection.
“Some of the players who were with us this year won’t be happy with this list. I’m sorry, and I want to thank everyone who was with us,” he said.
Joao Pedro responded on Instagram with a calm and respectful message.
“I tried to give my best at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfill this dream of representing my country in a World Cup, but I remain calm and focused, as I always try to be,” he wrote.
“Joys and frustrations are part of football. From now on, I wish good luck to everyone who is there and I will be just another fan cheering for them to bring the sixth title home.”
Chelsea award offers recognition after setback
The Brazil snub will hurt, but Chelsea’s award is a clear sign of how highly Joao Pedro is valued at Stamford Bridge.
In a season of pressure and scrutiny, he has delivered goals, creativity and consistency. His quick adaptation after a big-money move has also made him a fan favourite.
For Joao Pedro, the next challenge is to finish the season strongly and use the disappointment of missing the World Cup as motivation. For Chelsea supporters, the vote makes one thing clear: his first season in blue has already been a major success.
