Tottenham Hotspur’s long-standing recruitment issues have come back into focus, with former forward Ronny Rosenthal revealing the club once passed on the chance to sign a young Cristiano Ronaldo.
Rosenthal explained that he identified Ronaldo’s potential during his early appearances for Sporting CP and recommended him to Tottenham, but the club chose not to pursue the move. The decision, made before Ronaldo’s rise to global stardom, now stands as one of many missed opportunities in Spurs’ transfer history.
The revelation comes at a difficult time for the north London side, who are enduring a troubled 2025–26 campaign and find themselves battling near the bottom of the Premier League table. Years of questionable recruitment decisions have contributed to a squad that struggles to compete at the highest level.
Rosenthal believes a key issue is the lack of pace and attacking threat in the current team, particularly following the departure of Son Heung-min. While previous setups under Ange Postecoglou delivered attractive football, the absence of speed in wide areas has reduced Tottenham’s effectiveness going forward.
According to the former striker, modern football increasingly rewards pace and directness — qualities he feels are missing from the current squad. Without them, Spurs have found it difficult to break down opponents or threaten consistently in attack.
Those shortcomings have played a significant role in Tottenham’s difficult season, with the club now locked in a tense relegation battle. A recent win over Aston Villa has provided some optimism, but the situation remains precarious as the campaign approaches its final stages.
With crucial fixtures ahead, Tottenham’s fate hangs in the balance — and past transfer decisions, including the failure to act on early advice about Ronaldo, serve as a reminder of how different things might have been.
