San Diego FC’s promising start unraveled into a 2-1 defeat against Minnesota United FC on Matchday 7 of the MLS regular season, as an early lead and a second-half red card defined a tense encounter on the West Coast.
The hosts struck first in the 7th minute when Luca Bombino finished a well-worked move, turning in a pass from Lewis Morgan to make it 1-0. The advantage, however, was short-lived. Minnesota United responded in the 15th minute, with Kyle Duncan leveling the match after being set up by Tomás Chancalay.
Momentum swung firmly toward the visitors before the break. In the 40th minute, Kelvin Yeboah put Minnesota in front with a decisive strike, giving the Loons a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
San Diego’s task became significantly harder just after halftime. Christopher McVey, already booked in the 11th minute, received a second caution and was sent off with a yellow-red card in the 46th minute, leaving the home side to chase the game with ten men.
Both coaches turned to their benches in search of control. San Diego introduced Marcus Ingvartsen, David Vazquez, Bryce Duke and Willy Kumado, while Minnesota brought on Devin Padelford, Wil Trapp, Carlos Harvey, Mamadou Dieng and Bongokuhle Hlongwane to manage their advantage. Joaquín Pereyra (69’) picked up Minnesota’s only yellow card, while San Diego’s Oscar Verhoeven and Mikey Varas were also booked.
No further goals followed Yeboah’s first-half winner, and Minnesota United closed out the match to claim all three points. Detailed statistics such as possession figures, shot counts and full lineups were not available at the time of writing.
