Wigan Athletic edged past Mansfield Town 2–1 in a tightly contested League One fixture on matchday 43, thanks to a decisive second-half penalty from Joe Taylor.
The hosts struck first on 25 minutes. Callum Wright finished off a well-worked move, converting after good build-up play from Raphael Borges Rodrigues, who provided the assist to make it 1–0 to Wigan.
Mansfield responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Lucas Akins levelled the score at 1–1, capitalising on service from defender Ryan Sweeney to bring the visitors back into the contest.
The match remained finely balanced into the second half, with both sides turning to their benches. Wigan introduced Christian Saydee for Dara Costelloe on 55 minutes, while Mansfield made a triple reshuffle around the 64th and 69th minutes, with Stephen McLaughlin, Tyler Roberts and Regan Hendry coming on as they searched for a winner.
The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute when Wigan were awarded a penalty. Joe Taylor stepped up and converted from the spot to restore the home side’s lead at 2–1. Taylor had earlier gone into the book with a yellow card on 43 minutes, while Sweeney (45′) and Jensen Weir (74′) were also cautioned in a competitive encounter.
Wigan made a flurry of late substitutions on 82 minutes, bringing on Morgan Fox, Ryan Trevitt and Owen Moxon, while Mansfield introduced Oliver Irow and Joe Gardner on 87 minutes as they chased an equaliser. The visitors, however, were unable to find a way past the Wigan defence in the closing stages.
The victory gives Wigan an important three points in the League One run-in, while Mansfield leave empty-handed despite Akins’ first-half equaliser. More detailed match statistics and events beyond goals, cards and substitutions were not available at the time of writing.
