Plymouth Argyle produced a stirring comeback to defeat Northampton Town 3-2 on matchday 46 of the League One season, overturning a two-goal deficit in a dramatic contest on 2 May 2026.
Northampton flew out of the blocks and were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. Elliott List opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing after a pass from Michael Jacobs. Five minutes later, Jacobs turned goalscorer himself, doubling the lead with an effort set up by Nesta Guinness-Walker.
Plymouth, however, responded before the interval. On 28 minutes, Lorent Tolaj halved the deficit, converting from a Joe Edwards assist to make it 2-1. The visitors were level by the 40th minute when Malachi Boateng struck, with Tolaj this time providing the assist to send the sides into half-time at 2-2.
The game’s momentum shifted further after the break. Plymouth’s Owen Dale and Northampton’s Conor McCarthy were among several players booked in a feisty spell, and McCarthy was sent off in the 62nd minute after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the hosts to finish the match with ten men.
Plymouth manager’s double change on 55 minutes proved decisive. Substitute Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu, introduced for Caleb Watts, became the match-winner in the 74th minute. He completed the comeback with Plymouth’s third goal, finishing a move created by fellow substitute Xavier Amaechi to make it 3-2.
Northampton made a flurry of late substitutions as they chased an equaliser, but Plymouth managed the closing stages and held on for all three points in an eventful regular-season finale.
Beyond the goals, bookings and substitutions listed, detailed statistics such as possession, shots, attendance and full line-ups were not available at the time of writing.
