Real Madrid have confirmed that club captain Dani Carvajal will leave the club this summer, bringing his remarkable 23-year association with Los Blancos to an end.

The veteran right-back will depart as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign, closing one of the most successful chapters in the club’s modern history.

Carvajal first joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2002 and later became a key figure in the first team, spending 13 seasons as part of the senior squad. The club paid tribute to him with “gratitude and affection,” describing him as one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football.

Now 34, Carvajal is expected to look for one final challenge abroad after a difficult season disrupted by injuries. Fitness problems restricted him to just 22 appearances across all competitions, but his status at the Santiago Bernabeu remains untouched.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez led the tributes, calling Carvajal “a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy.”

“His image alongside our beloved and remembered Alfredo Di Stefano laying the first stone of Ciudad Real Madrid will forever remain in the hearts of all Madridistas and in the history of our club,” Perez said on the club’s official website.

Perez added: “Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and will always be his home.”

Carvajal leaves Madrid as one of the most decorated players in football history. During his time in the Spanish capital, he won 27 trophies, including six Champions League titles, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and four Spanish Super Cups.

His role in Real Madrid’s 2024 Champions League triumph was especially memorable. He scored in the final and was later named the Best Player of the match, underlining his ability to deliver on the biggest stage.

Carvajal also enjoyed major success with Spain, winning Euro 2024 and the Nations League. His performances earned him a place in the FIFPro 2024 World XI, confirming that even in the later years of his career, he remained among the world’s leading full-backs.

For Real Madrid supporters, his summer exit will be more than the departure of a veteran defender. Carvajal leaves as a captain, academy graduate, serial winner and symbol of Madridismo, a player whose legacy at the club is already secure.
