Palermo FC strengthened their position in the Serie B table with a 2–0 home win over Calcio Avellino SSD on matchday 33, capitalising on an early breakthrough and a first-half red card for the visitors.
The hosts struck first in the 12th minute. Antonio Palumbo finished off a well-worked move, converting after being set up by Jérémy Le Douaron to give Palermo a 1–0 lead and early control of the contest.
The game’s momentum tilted further towards Palermo late in the opening half. Avellino defender Armando Izzo was booked in the 37th minute and then sent off six minutes later with a second caution, leaving the visitors to play with ten men from the 43rd minute. In between, Palermo’s Niccolò Pierozzi had also gone into the referee’s book, while Lorenco Šimić picked up a yellow card for Avellino on 45 minutes.
Both sides turned to their benches in search of an edge. Avellino made an early change on 33 minutes, introducing Andréa Le Borgne for Luca Palmiero, and followed up with a double substitution at half-time. Palermo, meanwhile, replaced Pierozzi with Emmanuel Gyasi at the break, later bringing on Alfred Gomis in goal for Jesse Joronen on 57 minutes and refreshing midfield with Aljosa Vasic and Samuel Giovane around the 70-minute mark.
Despite their numerical advantage, Palermo had to wait until the 82nd minute to kill off the match. Filippo Ranocchia doubled the lead, finishing after a pass from Joel Pohjanpalo to make it 2–0 and seal the points for the Rosanero.
Gyasi was booked on 66 minutes as Palermo managed the closing stages, with Giangiacomo Magnani coming on for Mattia Bani in the 85th minute to help see out the result. Avellino introduced attacking options including Roberto Insigne and Gennaro Tutino but were unable to find a way back.
