CA Newell’s Old Boys claimed a hard-fought 3–2 victory over CA Unión on Friday night in the Liga Profesional Apertura, surviving a late push from the hosts after a five-goal contest packed into 90 minutes.
Unión struck first in Santa Fe, taking the lead inside four minutes. Marcelo Estigarribia finished a move set up by Julián Palacios to put the home side 1–0 up and briefly in control of the matchday 15 encounter.
Newell’s were soon level in unusual fashion. In the 13th minute, Unión’s Matías Mansilla diverted the ball into his own net, bringing the visitors back to 1–1. That setback shifted the momentum and Newell’s capitalised before the break.
In the 38th minute, Jerónimo Russo completed the turnaround with a regular-time strike to give Newell’s a 2–1 advantage heading into half-time. Russo later picked up a yellow card in the 67th minute, one of several bookings in a combative contest that also saw cautions for Luca Regiardo, Lautaro Vargas, Martín Ortega, Estigarribia and Palacios.
Newell’s appeared to seal the points in the 76th minute when substitute Ignacio Ramírez, introduced moments earlier, extended the lead to 3–1. Unión responded late through another substitute, with Lucas Menossi pulling one back in the 87th minute to set up a tense finale.
Despite late pressure and further changes from both benches, Newell’s held firm to secure all three points away from home. Detailed statistics such as possession figures, shots and goalkeeper performances were not available at the time of writing.
The result keeps Newell’s firmly in the mix in the Liga Profesional Apertura race, while Unión are left to reflect on missed chances and a costly own goal in a match that swung on key moments at both ends of the pitch.
