New Zealand are heading back to the World Cup after a 16-year absence, securing their place at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The All Whites last appeared on football’s biggest stage in 2010, where they made headlines by going unbeaten in the group stage, including a memorable draw against defending champions Italy.

Despite that achievement, they narrowly missed out on the knockout rounds. Their only other appearance came in 1982, and they are still searching for their first-ever World Cup victory.

This time, they arrive with renewed belief and a squad capable of causing problems, even if they are not considered among the tournament favourites.

Goalkeepers

New Zealand have solid options between the posts, led by experienced first-choice goalkeeper Max Crocombe. He is supported by Alex Paulsen, currently gaining experience in Europe, and Michael Woud, who adds further depth to the position.

Squad:

  • Alex Paulsen (Lechia Gdansk)
  • Max Crocombe (Millwall)
  • Michael Woud (Auckland FC)

Defenders

The defensive unit offers a mix of experience and versatility, although it may be tested against stronger opposition. Full-backs Tyler Bindon and Liberato Cacace are expected to play key roles, contributing both defensively and going forward.

In central defence, players like Michael Boxall and Finn Surman provide stability, while additional options give the coach flexibility depending on the opposition.

Squad:

  • Tyler Bindon (Nottingham Forest)
  • Michael Boxall (Minnesota)
  • Liberato Cacace (Wrexham)
  • Tim Payne (Wellington)
  • Nando Pijnaker (Auckland FC)
  • Tommy Smith (Braintree Town)
  • Francis de Vries (Auckland FC)
  • Finn Surman (Portland Timbers)
  • Callan Elliot (Auckland FC)

Midfielders

Midfield is arguably New Zealand’s strongest area. Marko Stamenic and Joe Bell are expected to anchor the team, offering both control and defensive balance.

Further forward, Sarpreet Singh adds creativity, while players like Matthew Garbett and Alex Rufer provide energy and depth, giving the team multiple tactical options.

Squad:

  • Joe Bell (Viking)
  • Marko Stamenic (Swansea)
  • Alex Rufer (Wellington)
  • Ryan Thomas (PEC Zwolle)
  • Lachlan Bayliss (Newcastle Jets)

Can New Zealand make an impact?

New Zealand may not be among the favourites, but their return to the World Cup brings a sense of unpredictability. With a balanced squad and growing international experience, the All Whites will aim to go beyond just competing.

Their main goal will be to secure a historic first win — and if momentum builds, they could become one of the tournament’s surprise packages.
