Middlesbrough have lodged a formal complaint with the EFL after claiming a Southampton staff member was caught spying on their training session ahead of this weekend’s Championship play-off semi-final.
The incident is reported to have taken place on Thursday morning at Rockliffe Park, just days before the first leg at the Riverside Stadium. According to reports, a man believed to be part of Southampton’s backroom team was seen hiding near the training ground while allegedly filming the session on a mobile phone.
Club officials approached the individual, who is said to have deleted the recorded material before refusing to provide identification. He then reportedly left the area and made his way to the nearby Rockliffe Hall Hotel.
Middlesbrough have since escalated the matter to the EFL, with an investigation expected. Online information is believed to link the individual to Southampton’s analytical staff, which could raise serious concerns if confirmed.
Any proven wrongdoing may breach league regulations, which require clubs to act with integrity and in good faith towards one another.
The situation has drawn comparisons to the 2019 “Spygate” controversy involving Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United, when a staff member was caught observing Derby County’s training. Leeds were ultimately fined £200,000 after admitting the offence.
This latest development adds further intrigue to an already high-stakes play-off clash, with both Middlesbrough and Southampton competing for a return to the Premier League.
