Jean-Philippe Mateta delivered a late masterclass off the bench as Crystal Palace came from behind to defeat Newcastle United 2–1 in the Premier League on matchday 32.
Newcastle struck first shortly before half-time. In the 43rd minute, William Osula finished a move set up by Lewis Miley, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead and leaving Palace with work to do after the break.
Palace’s response was shaped by a string of second-half substitutions. Brennan Johnson and Will Hughes made way on 64 minutes for Ismaïla Sarr and Adam Wharton, before Jørgen Strand Larsen was replaced by Mateta a minute later. The changes paid off as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
The breakthrough arrived on 80 minutes. Tyrick Mitchell supplied the assist and Mateta applied the finishing touch to level the score at 1–1, setting up a tense finale at Selhurst Park.
Newcastle, who had earlier introduced Harvey Barnes for Anthony Gordon on 71 minutes, collected a series of bookings as they tried to protect their advantage and then the draw. Malick Thiaw was cautioned in the 68th minute, followed by Joelinton in the 74th and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 90th.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time. In the 90th minute plus four, Palace were awarded a penalty, and Mateta stepped up to convert from the spot, completing his brace and turning the match on its head at 2–1.
Both sides made further late changes, including Daichi Kamada entering for Yeremy and Borna Sosa replacing Mitchell for Palace, while Newcastle turned to Nick Woltemade, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa in search of a response that never came.
The win boosts Crystal Palace’s position in the Premier League table as the season moves into its final stretch, while Newcastle leave South London empty-handed despite having led for more than half the match.
