Vancouver Whitecaps FC secured a solid 2–0 win over New York City FC in MLS regular-season action on Matchday 7, capitalising on key moments in each half to claim all three points.
The breakthrough came just before halftime in the 44th minute. Defender Mathías Laborda struck for the opener, finishing a move created by Sebastian Berhalter. Laborda’s goal sent Vancouver into the interval with a 1–0 lead and shifted the momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour.
New York City FC turned to their bench shortly after the hour, introducing Talles Magno for Hannes Wolf in the 63rd minute in search of an attacking spark. Vancouver responded with a double change of their own at the same time, bringing on Bruno Caicedo and Emmanuel Sabbi for Cheikh Sabaly and Andrés Cubas, respectively, to freshen up midfield and the forward line.
Vancouver’s pressure was eventually rewarded again in the closing stages. In the 86th minute, striker Brian White doubled the lead, finishing a chance created by substitute Bruno Caicedo to make it 2–0 and effectively seal the contest.
The hosts picked up two yellow cards in the second half, with Cubas cautioned in the 53rd minute and Oliver Larraz booked in the 80th minute after coming on for Berhalter three minutes earlier. NYCFC made further late substitutions, introducing Malachi Jones, Arnau Farnós and Jonathan Shore, but were unable to find a route back into the match.
White was withdrawn in stoppage time for Rayan Elloumi as Vancouver saw out a professional home performance. Detailed statistics such as possession figures, shots and full lineups were not available at the time of writing.
The result strengthens Vancouver’s position in the MLS regular-season standings, while New York City FC leave empty-handed after failing to score on the road.
