Calcio Avellino SSD snatched a remarkable 1–1 draw against US Catanzaro on matchday 34 of Serie B, with goalkeeper Antony Iannarilli scoring a stunning equaliser deep into stoppage time.
The visitors looked on course for all three points after taking the lead on 60 minutes. US Catanzaro captain Pietro Iemmello broke the deadlock with a regular-time strike, finishing off a move created by Simone Pontisso. The goal put Catanzaro 1–0 up and appeared to tilt a tight contest in their favour.
Discipline, however, soon became a problem for the away side. Catanzaro picked up a series of bookings, with Nicolò Brighenti cautioned in the 56th minute before receiving a second yellow in the 75th minute to leave his team down to ten men. Federico Di Francesco and Pontisso were also shown yellow cards as the tension increased.
Avellino coach turned to his bench early in the second half, introducing Filippo Missori at the break and later bringing on attacking options Andrea Favilli and Cosimo Patierno. The key change came in the 64th minute when Roberto Insigne entered the pitch, adding creativity in the final third.
The late pressure finally told in the 90+5th minute. In an extraordinary twist, Avellino goalkeeper Antony Iannarilli went forward and scored the equaliser, assisted by Insigne, to level the match at 1–1. Iannarilli was booked shortly afterwards, but his decisive contribution ensured a valuable point for Calcio Avellino SSD.
The match featured multiple substitutions on both sides, as Catanzaro introduced Marco Pompetti and later Goncalo Esteves, Ruggero Frosinini, Davide Buglio and Bruno Verrengia in an effort to manage the game after taking the lead. Detailed data beyond goals, bookings and substitutions is not available.
The draw leaves both teams reflecting on missed opportunities in their Serie B campaigns, but the game will be remembered above all for Iannarilli’s rare and dramatic goalkeeper goal.
