CA Independiente claimed derby bragging rights with a late 1–0 win over Racing Club in the Avellaneda clásico on matchday 13 of the Liga Profesional Apertura.
The decisive moment arrived in the 81st minute, when Gabriel Ávalos broke the deadlock. The Independiente forward finished off a move created by Santiago Gabriel Montiel, whose assist set up Ávalos to make it 1–0 and send the home side in front.
The match was tight and competitive throughout, with both teams committing fully to challenges in a high-stakes rivalry. Racing picked up the first booking on 21 minutes as Santiago Sosa went into the referee’s notebook. Independiente responded with their own yellow on 39 minutes shown to Sebastián Valdez, underlining the intensity of the contest.
Marcos Rojo was cautioned for Racing just before the interval, while Montiel, later the provider for the winning goal, also received a yellow card in the 58th minute for the hosts. Racing substitute Matko Miljevic collected a late booking at 90 minutes as the visitors pushed unsuccessfully for an equaliser.
Both coaches turned to their benches in search of solutions. Independiente introduced Mateo Perez Curci shortly before the hour mark, and later Maximiliano Gutierrez and Juan Fedorco, while Racing brought on Duván Vergara, Bruno Zuculini, Miljevic and Gastón Martirena as they chased the game.
Ávalos’s late strike ultimately proved enough to separate the sides, securing a vital home victory for Independiente and dealing a setback to Racing’s Apertura ambitions.
