Late Fagioli Strike Earns 10-Man Fiorentina Crucial Win at Verona
Nicolò Fagioli struck an 82nd-minute winner as ACF Fiorentina edged Hellas Verona FC 1–0 on matchday 31 of the Serie A regular season, grinding out three points in a tense finale that ended with both sides down to ten men.
In a game where full statistical data and many match events were not immediately available, the decisive moment came late. Fagioli broke the deadlock for Fiorentina eight minutes from time, finishing off a move created by Jack Harrison. The midfielder’s goal put the visitors 1–0 up and ultimately proved enough to settle the contest.
Discipline was a recurring theme. Verona picked up the first booking when Roberto Gagliardini was shown a yellow card in the 17th minute. Victor Nelsson followed with another caution for the hosts in the 79th minute, as Verona pushed to keep Fiorentina at bay.
Fagioli’s dramatic impact continued after his goal, as he was booked in the 84th minute. The match then exploded a minute later with a double sending-off: Fiorentina’s Albert Guðmundsson and Verona substitute Tomáš Suslov both received red cards in the 85th minute, leaving each team with ten players for the closing stages. Verona’s Rafik Belghali was also cautioned in the 88th minute.
Both coaches turned to their benches throughout the second half. Fiorentina introduced Roberto Piccoli just before the hour mark, followed by Jacopo Fazzini and Luís Balbo Vieira in the 76th minute. Verona responded with attacking changes, bringing on Amin Sarr, Domagoj Bradarić and the later-dismissed Suslov, before a late swap saw Daniel Mosquera replace Nelsson. Fiorentina further secured the result with stoppage-time changes, including Daniele Rugani and Marco Brescianini.
The narrow win strengthens Fiorentina’s position in the Serie A table, while Verona are left to rue a late lapse on a day where comprehensive match statistics remain unavailable.
