The visitors took control in the 24th minute when Anton Kade opened the scoring, finishing a move created by Michael Gregoritsch to give Augsburg a 1–0 lead. Kade then doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, striking again in the 45+3rd minute after being set up by Dimitris Giannoulis to send the away side into the break 2–0 up.

Werder Bremen responded after making a triple change at half-time, introducing Samuel Mbangula, Justin Njinmah and Salim Musah. The hosts found a lifeline in the 64th minute, when Romano Schmid converted following good work from Olivier Deman to reduce the deficit to 2–1.

Augsburg, however, quickly reasserted themselves.
