Atalanta held to goalless draw by Genoa as European hopes take hit
Atalanta were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Genoa in Bergamo, a result that could deal a serious blow to their hopes of qualifying for European competition.
Despite dominating large parts of the match, the hosts were unable to break down a disciplined Genoa side and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.
The home team controlled possession with 60% of the ball and created significantly more attacking opportunities, finishing the game with 21 shots compared to Genoa’s seven.
Atalanta also held a clear advantage in expected goals (1.97 to 0.52) and recorded 40 touches in the opposition box, but lacked the cutting edge needed to convert their dominance into goals.
Genoa, on the other hand, focused on defensive organisation and rarely threatened going forward, failing to create any big chances throughout the match. Their approach proved effective, as they managed to frustrate Atalanta for the full 90 minutes.
In the second half, Atalanta made several attacking substitutions in an attempt to find a breakthrough, but Genoa remained compact and resilient. Bijlow was key to the visitors’ result, producing a number of important saves to keep the score level.
As the final whistle blew, Atalanta were left disappointed after dropping two crucial points in front of their home crowd, while Genoa walked away with a hard-earned result that owed much to their defensive discipline and goalkeeping heroics.
