Afeez Aremu’s lightning opener proved decisive as Aberdeen FC earned a 1–0 home victory over Kilmarnock FC in the Scottish Premiership relegation round on matchday 34.
The hosts struck almost immediately. In the 1st minute, Aremu finished a move set up by Stuart Armstrong, giving Aberdeen an ideal start and a lead they would defend for the rest of the afternoon. The goal stood as the only time either side found the net.
Kilmarnock were forced into an early change on 5 minutes, with Dominic Thompson replacing Jamie Brandon, but the reshuffle did not produce an equaliser. As the game settled, Aberdeen managed their narrow advantage, turning to the bench in the second half to maintain energy and control. Graeme Shinnie and Dennis Geiger came on just before the hour mark, while Ante Palaversa and Mats Knoester were introduced in the 72nd minute, shortly after Aremu and Armstrong departed.
Kilmarnock responded with attacking substitutions of their own. Rory McKenzie, Bruce Anderson and Kyle Magennis all entered the fray in search of a leveller, followed later by David Watson and Brad Lyons. However, the visitors’ frustration grew as a series of yellow cards punctuated the second half. George Stanger, Tom Lowery and Robbie Deas were all booked, before Magennis was cautioned in stoppage time. Aberdeen’s Liam Morrison also received a late yellow card.
With neither side able to add to the scoreline, Aberdeen’s early breakthrough remained the difference in a hard-fought contest. Detailed statistics beyond goals, substitutions and bookings were not available at the time of writing.
The result gives Aberdeen a valuable three points in the relegation round. Full match details and further updates can be found on Ballaxy, with more information on the clubs at the Aberdeen and Kilmarnock team pages, and wider league context via the Premier League overview.
