Uruguay striker Luis Suárez has hinted at a possible return to international football, despite stepping away from the national team in 2024.
The 39-year-old had previously made himself unavailable after criticising head coach Marcelo Bielsa, claiming the manager had created divisions within the squad. However, Suárez has now softened his stance and admitted he could reconsider if called upon.
“I would never say no to the national team if they need me, especially with a World Cup coming up,” he said. “At the time, I stepped aside to give opportunities to younger players. I also said things I shouldn’t have and have apologised.”
Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 69 goals in 143 appearances, has represented his country at four World Cups since 2010. His international career has included both iconic and controversial moments, from his decisive handball against Ghana in 2010 to the suspension following the biting incident involving Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.
Now playing for Inter Miami, Suárez insists his competitive drive remains strong despite his age. He says his continued passion for the game is evident in both his frustration during difficult moments and his enjoyment when scoring.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Uruguay have already secured qualification and will begin their campaign in June. While Suárez is no longer a regular part of the setup, his latest comments suggest a return cannot be ruled out if the opportunity arises.
