Greenwood Stars as Marseille See Off Metz to Stay in Ligue 1 Hunt

Olympique de Marseille strengthened their Ligue 1 position with a 3–1 home victory over FC Metz on matchday 29, powered by a creative display from Mason Greenwood and decisive goals at key moments.

Marseille struck first on 13 minutes. Greenwood slipped a precise ball through for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who finished to give the hosts an early 1–0 lead. The advantage was preserved into the break, despite a late first-half booking for Facundo Medina.

Just after half-time, Marseille appeared to take full control. In the 48th minute, Greenwood again turned provider, assisting Igor Paixão to make it 2–0. However, Metz hit back immediately. Only a minute later, Georgiy Tsitaishvili halved the deficit, converting after good work from Gauthier Hein to bring the score to 2–1 and briefly shift the momentum.

The second half then settled into a more controlled rhythm, with Metz picking up yellow cards for Maxime Colin and Koffi Franck Kouao as they tried to disrupt Marseille’s flow. Aubameyang was withdrawn in the 72nd minute for Arthur Vermeeren, while Greenwood made way for Hamed Traoré in the 82nd minute as the hosts sought fresh energy to close out the contest.

Traoré delivered the final word deep into stoppage time. In the 90th minute plus three, he finished a move set up by substitute Amine Gouiri to restore a two-goal cushion and seal a 3–1 win for Marseille.
