Nico Williams Brace Caps Late Athletic Comeback in Six-Goal Basque Derby

A lethal late surge from Athletic Club earned a 4–2 victory away to Deportivo Alavés on matchday 34 of the Primera Division, with Nico Williams deciding the Basque derby through a brilliant brace.

Alavés struck first on 8 minutes. Antonio Blanco finished a move set up by Ángel Pérez to give the hosts an early 1–0 lead and the advantage they carried into half-time. The opening period was also marked by bookings for Alavés forward Toni Martínez and Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde.

Athletic transformed the contest immediately after the break. Introduced at half-time, Roberto Navarro needed barely a minute to make his mark, levelling in the 46th minute after being set up by Nico Williams for 1–1.

Alavés responded on 68 minutes when Nahuel Tenaglia restored the home side’s lead, finishing a chance created by Abde Rebbach for 2–1. But the final quarter of an hour belonged to Athletic’s substitutes and wide threats.

Oihan Sancet, also brought on at the interval, equalised in the 74th minute from a Yuri Berchiche assist to make it 2–2. Then came Nico Williams’ decisive spell. The winger first struck in the 83rd minute, turning in a pass from Gorka Guruzeta to put Athletic ahead for the first time at 3–2. Four minutes later, the same combination repeated itself, Guruzeta again feeding Williams, who sealed the 4–2 win in the 87th minute.

The closing stages saw further yellow cards, including cautions for Nico Williams and Alavés substitute Carles Aleñá, as the visitors saw out a high-tempo derby triumph.
