Sheffield Wednesday Edge West Brom 2–1 to Close Championship Campaign
Sheffield Wednesday FC finished their Championship season on a high with a 2–1 victory over West Bromwich Albion FC on matchday 46, holding off a late fightback from the visitors at Hillsborough.
The hosts seized control before half-time with a decisive four-minute spell. Nathaniel Chalobah, already in the referee’s book after a 32nd-minute yellow card, opened the scoring in the 36th minute, making it 1–0 to Sheffield Wednesday. Liam Palmer doubled the advantage on 40 minutes, giving Wednesday a strong 2–0 lead at the break.
West Brom responded with a triple substitution at half-time, introducing Daryl Dike, Karlan Grant and Tammer Bany in place of Aune Heggebø, Oliver Bostock and Josh Maja. The changes injected fresh energy, but Wednesday continued to manage the game, with Max Lowe booked for the home side on 57 minutes.
The match tightened further in the closing stages. Jaden Heskey picked up a yellow card on 81 minutes, moments before one of West Brom’s substitutes made their impact. In the 82nd minute, Karlan Grant pulled a goal back for the visitors to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and set up a tense finale.
Both managers turned to their benches again, with Wednesday bringing on Olaf Kobacki for Jamal Lowe on 81 minutes and later replacing goalscorer Palmer with Mackenzie Maltby in added time. West Brom introduced Jed Wallace and Souleyman Mandey in the final minutes, while Bany was booked on 90 minutes as the visitors pushed desperately for an equaliser.
Sheffield Wednesday ultimately held firm to secure the win and close out their regular-season campaign with three points. Detailed statistics such as possession, shots and full lineups were not available at the time of writing.
