Sheffield United Fight Back to Edge Derby on Championship Finale
Sheffield United FC came from behind to claim a 2–1 win over Derby County FC on the final day of the Championship regular season, turning around an early deficit with a composed second-half display.
Derby struck first after just five minutes. Samuel Szmodics put the hosts in front, finishing a move that gave the Rams an ideal start and briefly lifted the home crowd’s hopes of closing out their campaign with a victory.
The game then settled into a competitive battle, with Derby defenders Sondre Langås and Matt Clarke both cautioned before the half-hour mark, underlining the intensity of the contest. Sheffield United picked up their first booking on 45 minutes when Harrison Burrows went into the referee’s notebook.
The visitors found their response after the interval. On 62 minutes, Thomas Cannon levelled the match for Sheffield United, converting after being set up by Patrick Bamford to make it 1–1. Just seven minutes later, the turnaround was complete: Sydie Peck struck in the 69th minute, finishing from a Gustavo Hamer assist to give the Blades a 2–1 lead.
Both managers turned to their benches as the half wore on, with Derby introducing Bobby Clark, Max Johnston, Oscar Fraulo and Lars-Jørgen Salvesen in search of a response, while Sheffield United brought on Tahith Chong, Joe Rothwell, Ki-Jana Hoever, Danny Ings and later Jaïro Riedewald to help see out the result.
Late yellow cards for Bobby Clark and Szmodics, plus a caution for Chong, reflected Derby’s frustration and Sheffield United’s determination to protect their advantage in the closing stages.
Sheffield United held firm to secure the comeback victory and close their Championship season on a positive note. More detailed statistics, line-ups and post-match reactions were not available at the time of writing.
