Late John Kennedy Winner Lifts Fluminense Past Chapecoense in Série A Clash
Fluminense FC claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chapecoense AF on matchday 13 of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, with substitute John Kennedy delivering a late winner in the 86th minute.
After a cagey first half where neither side found a breakthrough, the game opened up following the interval. Fluminense made an attacking change at the break, introducing Yeferson Soteldo for Kevin Serna, and the hosts were rewarded shortly after the restart.
In the 56th minute, Jefferson Savarino converted from the penalty spot to give Fluminense a 1-0 lead. The advantage sparked a response from Chapecoense, who reshaped their side with several substitutions, including the introduction of Ênio and João Vitor around the 70-minute mark.
Chapecoense drew level in the 78th minute when Ênio, coming off the bench, finished a move set up by Marcinho to make it 1-1. Fluminense reacted swiftly, turning to their own bench as Ganso, John Kennedy and Alisson all entered the fray in the 79th minute.
The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute. Kennedy, one of the trio of late substitutes, scored from open play, with Alisson providing the assist, to restore Fluminense’s lead at 2-1. Chapecoense pushed forward in the closing stages but could not find another equaliser.
The match ended amid growing tension. Chapecoense collected a series of bookings, with Jean Carlos, Eduardo Doma, Ênio and João Vitor all shown yellow cards. Doma was then sent off in stoppage time after receiving a red card, while Ganso was booked for Fluminense.
