Mendy Brace and Borrelli Winner Fire Cagliari Past Atalanta in Five-Goal Thriller
Cagliari Calcio edged Atalanta BC 3–2 in a dramatic Serie A clash on matchday 34, with Paul Mendy’s first-half brace and a decisive strike from Gennaro Borrelli proving enough in a match dominated by rapid swings of momentum.
The hosts made a dream start, striking inside the first minute. Paul Mendy finished off an early move, converting after being set up by Michel Adopo to give Cagliari a 1–0 lead. Atalanta were still reeling when Mendy struck again in the 8th minute, this time unassisted, doubling the advantage and putting the home side firmly in control at 2–0.
Atalanta, however, clawed their way back before the break through Gianluca Scamacca. The forward halved the deficit in the 40th minute, and then, on the stroke of half-time, he completed his brace. Assisted by Giorgio Scalvini in the 45th minute, Scamacca levelled the match at 2–2, sending the sides into the interval on equal terms.
Cagliari manager responded at half-time by introducing Gennaro Borrelli for the two-goal Mendy, and the change paid off almost instantly. Just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Borrelli restored Cagliari’s lead with what proved to be the winning goal, making it 3–2.
Both coaches turned to their benches as the second half wore on, with a flurry of substitutions around the 56th and 73rd minutes as Atalanta searched for an equaliser and Cagliari looked to consolidate their narrow lead. Despite the fresh legs introduced on both sides, the scoreline remained unchanged.
