Last-Gasp Bonetig Winner Stuns San Diego as Portland Snatch MLS Victory
Portland Timbers grabbed a dramatic late winner to edge San Diego FC 2–1 in MLS regular-season action on matchday 10, with Alex Bonetig deciding the contest deep into stoppage time.
The visitors struck first on 26 minutes when Kevin Kelsy put Portland 1–0 up, capping an early spell in which the Timbers made their attacking pressure count. San Diego responded quickly, drawing level just six minutes later. Anders Dreyer converted from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute to make it 1–1, restoring parity before the interval.
The second half featured a series of tactical changes, particularly from San Diego, who turned to their bench in search of a winner. Ian Pilcher made way for Wilson Eisner on 59 minutes, before a double change on 72 minutes introduced Pedro Soma and Lewis Morgan for Aníbal Godoy and David Vazquez. Discipline played a part in a physical second half, with yellow cards shown to San Diego’s Marcus Ingvartsen (63’) and Pedro Soma (76’), while Portland’s Kristoffer Velde was booked in the 69th minute.
Just when the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Portland struck the decisive blow. Bonetig scored in the 90th minute plus six of added time, sealing a 2–1 away victory and leaving San Diego empty-handed despite their late substitutions and efforts.
