Baribo Hat-Trick Denies Red Bulls in 4–4 MLS Thriller With D.C. United

The New York Red Bulls and D.C. United SC shared eight goals and the points in a dramatic 4–4 draw on MLS matchday 9, with Tai Baribo’s hat-trick stealing the headlines in a frantic encounter.

The hosts flew out of the blocks. In the 15th minute, Julian Hall opened the scoring for the Red Bulls, finishing after a set-up by Ronald Donkor. Donkor then doubled the advantage himself six minutes later, striking in the 21st minute to make it 2–0.

D.C. United responded before the break. In the 37th minute, Baribo began his prolific night, converting from a Jackson Hopkins assist to cut the deficit to 2–1.

The Red Bulls restored daylight early in the second half. On 52 minutes, Jorge Ruvalcaba added a third for the home side, with Emil Forsberg providing the assist. But the visitors refused to fold, immediately halving the deficit in the 54th minute when Hopkins scored from a Peglow assist to make it 3–2.

Baribo then dragged D.C. level in the 59th minute, again assisted by Peglow, capping a rapid turnaround at 3–3. The end-to-end pattern continued into the final quarter of an hour. Ruvalcaba struck again in the 71st minute, this time set up by Donkor, to edge the Red Bulls back in front at 4–3.

United had one last response. In the 80th minute, Baribo completed his hat-trick, finishing from Silvan Hefti’s assist to bring the match to its final 4–4 scoreline.

There was no shortage of disciplinary action: Adri Mehmeti was booked for the Red Bulls in the 50th minute, while Matti Peltola (86′) and substitute Caden Clark (90′) saw yellow for D.C. United. Both coaches also turned to their benches frequently, with a series of second-half substitutions, including appearances for Joyeux Masanka Bungi, Maxim Choupo-Moting, and several D.C. United changes.
