Early Blitz Seals Vital Birmingham Win Over Preston
Birmingham City FC struck twice inside the opening 16 minutes to secure a 2–1 home win over Preston North End FC in the Championship on matchday 44, holding on after an early response from the visitors.
The hosts made an ideal start on 10 minutes when Jay Stansfield opened the scoring. The forward finished off a move created by Ibrahim Osman, whose assist set Birmingham on their way and gave them an early 1–0 lead.
Osman quickly turned scorer six minutes later. With Preston still reeling, the Birmingham attacker found the net himself to double the advantage to 2–0, putting the home side firmly in control.
Preston, however, pulled one back in the 25th minute. Andrew Hughes struck to make it 2–1, halving the deficit and ensuring the contest remained finely poised heading into the rest of the first half.
Birmingham were forced into an early change in the 37th minute as Demarai Gray replaced Osman, who had already contributed a goal and an assist. After the interval, the pattern shifted more towards tactical adjustments than clear-cut chances, with both managers using their benches heavily.
For the hosts, Ethan Laird made way for Bright Osayi-Samuel on 65 minutes, while Stansfield was substituted for Jhon Solis in the 72nd. Preston responded with a series of changes: Andrew Moran came on for Brad Potts on 65 minutes, followed by a double switch in the 73rd as Daniel Jebbison and Thierry Small replaced Milutin Osmajić and Pol Valentín Sancho. Robbie Brady then entered for Andrija Vukčević in the 78th minute, and Michael Smith replaced Lewis Dobbin on 84 minutes.
Preston’s frustration was underlined by yellow cards for Vukčević on the stroke of half-time and Moran in the 72nd minute. Despite their efforts and a reshaped attack, the visitors could not find an equaliser, and Birmingham saw out the closing stages to claim all three points.
