Millwall punish Stoke with clinical display in Championship run-in

Millwall FC strengthened their Championship credentials with a composed 3–1 victory away to Stoke City FC on matchday 44, capitalising on key moments at both ends of the pitch.

The visitors moved in front on 20 minutes when Camiel Neghli broke the deadlock, giving Millwall an early advantage to build on. Stoke struggled to produce a response before the interval, and Millwall’s control was underpinned by a combative midfield in a first half that also saw early yellow cards for Derek Mazou-Sacko and Casper De Norre.

Millwall doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half. Femi Azeez struck in the 55th minute, finishing off a move created by Thierno Ballo to make it 2–0 and put the London side firmly in command.

Stoke were handed a route back into the game on the hour mark in unusual fashion. Caleb Taylor turned the ball into his own net in the 60th minute, credited as an own goal for Millwall, to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and briefly lift the home crowd.

The hosts pushed through a flurry of substitutions, including the introductions of Sam Gallagher and Lamine Cissé just before and after the own goal, followed later by Milan Smit and Ben Pearson. However, Millwall restored their two-goal cushion in the 69th minute when Josh Coburn finished clinically, with Neghli turning provider to complete a strong personal performance.

Millwall managed the closing stages effectively, making multiple changes around the 80th minute, including the arrivals of Dan McNamara, Mihailo Ivanovic and Tom Watson. McNamara went into the referee’s book late on, adding to Millwall’s tally of cautions, but it did not affect the outcome.

The 3–1 result leaves Stoke reflecting on missed opportunities at home, while Millwall take a valuable away win into the final stretch of the regular Championship season. Detailed statistics such as possession, shots and full line-ups were not available at the time of writing.
