Chancalay Shines as Minnesota United See Off Portland Timbers 2–0
Tomás Chancalay inspired Minnesota United FC to a composed 2–0 win over the Portland Timbers on Saturday, as the Loons strengthened their position in the MLS regular season on matchday 8.
The breakthrough came early in the first half. In the 16th minute, Chancalay finished off a move created by Jefferson Díaz, giving Minnesota a 1–0 lead and setting the tone for the night. The Argentine attacker remained at the heart of the hosts’ best moments, combining productivity with an edge that later saw him booked in the 26th minute.
Portland responded with adjustments after the interval, introducing Kevin Kelsy for Felipe Mora on 55 minutes in search of more attacking thrust. But any hopes of a comeback were dented just five minutes later. In the 60th minute, Chancalay turned provider, laying on an assist for Kelvin Yeboah, who doubled Minnesota’s advantage to 2–0.
Minnesota managed the game efficiently from there. Head coach’s in-game tweaks included bringing on Devin Padelford for Nicolás Romero in the 66th minute, before a double change on 74 minutes saw Chancalay and Owen Gene replaced by Mauricio Gonzalez and Wil Trapp, respectively. Nectarios Triantis picked up a yellow card in the 73rd minute as the hosts maintained their intensity.
Portland continued to shuffle their options, with Alexander Aravena replacing Antony on 66 minutes and Ariel Lassiter coming on for Alex Bonetig at 80 minutes, but the visitors were unable to find a route back into the contest.
Late substitutions for Minnesota saw Joaquín Pereyra make way for James Rodríguez and two-goal contributor Yeboah replaced by Mamadou Dieng in the 90th minute, helping the Loons see out a professional home victory.
