Owusu stars as Montreal Impact dismantle New York Red Bulls 4–1 in MLS clash
Montreal Impact FC put on a ruthless attacking display to beat New York Red Bulls 4–1 on MLS matchday 8, powered by a standout performance from Prince-Osei Owusu.
The hosts struck early in the fifth minute when Victor Loturi opened the scoring, finishing a move created by Owusu to give Montreal an ideal start. Owusu then doubled the lead himself from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, calmly converting to send Montreal into the break firmly in control.
Just after half-time, Montreal tightened their grip on the game. In the 48th minute, Matthew Longstaff made it 3–0, again with Owusu providing the assist as the home attack sliced through the Red Bulls’ defence.
The visitors were handed a lifeline eight minutes later in highly unusual fashion. Longstaff, fresh from scoring at the right end, turned the ball into his own net in the 53rd minute to reduce the deficit to 3–1. However, New York were unable to build sustained momentum from the stroke of fortune.
Montreal’s response was composed. Substitute Kwadwo Opoku restored the three-goal cushion in the 77th minute, capping another incisive move and once more finishing from an Owusu assist to make it 4–1.
The match featured a flurry of yellow cards, with Adri Mehmeti, Jorge Ruvalcaba and Ronald Donkor booked for New York, while Brayan Vera, Thomas Guilier and Longstaff saw yellow for Montreal. Both coaches turned to their benches extensively after the interval, with Opoku’s introduction on 58 minutes proving especially decisive.
