Late Rutter Strike Denies Spurs Victory in Four-Goal Premier League Thriller
Tottenham Hotspur were pegged back by a stoppage-time equaliser as Brighton & Hove Albion snatched a 2-2 draw in a dramatic Premier League clash on matchday 33.
Pedro Porro put Spurs in front on 39 minutes, finishing a move created by Xavi Simons. The right-back’s strike rewarded the home side after a first half in which both teams had threatened in spells.
Brighton responded deep into first-half stoppage time. Introduced as an early substitute for Diego Gómez in the 20th minute, Kaoru Mitoma made a decisive impact, levelling in the 45+3rd minute after being set up by Pascal Groß to send the teams into the break at 1-1.
The second half brought a flurry of yellow cards, with Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma and Kevin Danso both booked, while Mats Wieffer was cautioned for Brighton. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi was also shown a yellow card on 53 minutes from the home technical area.
Tottenham appeared to have done enough when Simons turned scorer in the 77th minute. The attacking midfielder finished a move involving substitute Lucas Bergvall, restoring the hosts’ lead at 2-1. Simons himself went into the referee’s book a minute later.
Brighton made a triple substitution on 75 minutes, including the introduction of Georginio Rutter for Danny Welbeck, and the forward proved crucial. In the 90+5th minute, Rutter struck an equaliser, assisted by Jan Paul van Hecke, to secure a point for the visitors and silence the home crowd.
Both managers used their benches heavily, with Mathys Tel, Archie Gray, João Palhinha, Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence all featuring for Spurs, while Maxim De Cuyper, Matt O’Riley, Georginio Rutter and Charalampos Kostoulas came on for Brighton. Further detailed statistics and events beyond the recorded goals, bookings and substitutions were not available at the time of writing.
