Aston Villa FC took a huge step towards the UEFA Europa League semi-finals with a comprehensive 4–0 home victory over Bologna FC 1909 in their quarter-final tie on matchday 2 of the knockout stage.
The hosts struck first on 16 minutes, when Ollie Watkins finished a move created by Morgan Rogers, giving Villa an early advantage. The pressure continued to mount on Bologna and, ten minutes later, Emiliano Buendía doubled the lead, converting after a delivery from left-back Lucas Digne on 26 minutes.
Villa’s first-half dominance was underlined in the 39th minute. This time Rogers got on the scoresheet himself, capping a flowing move after being set up by captain John McGinn to make it 3–0 before the interval.
Bologna’s frustration showed shortly before the break as Federico Bernardeschi received a yellow card in the 29th minute. The Italian side responded with a triple substitution at half-time, bringing on Riccardo Orsolini, Simon Sohm and Nadir Zortea in place of Bernardeschi, Remo Freuler and João Mário Lopes in an attempt to regain control.
Villa managed the second half confidently, rotating their squad with a series of changes. Leon Bailey and Tammy Abraham replaced McGinn and Watkins on 64 minutes, followed by Douglas Luiz and Jadon Sancho for Youri Tielemans and Rogers on 74 minutes. Amadou Onana made way for Lamare Bogarde in the 78th minute as the hosts saw out the game.
Bologna’s final changes included Jens Odgaard for Santiago Castro (76′) and Torbjørn Heggem for Nicolò Casale (82′), but they could not find a way back. Instead, Villa added a late fourth: centre-back Ezri Konsa scored in the 89th minute, finishing a move created by Abraham to complete the 4–0 rout.
The result leaves Bologna with a mountain to climb in the return leg, while Villa are firmly in control of this Europa League quarter-final. Detailed statistics beyond goals, cards and substitutions were not available at the time of writing.
