FC Barcelona claimed a valuable 2–1 away victory over Club Atlético de Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on 14 April 2026, taking control of the tie despite finishing the match with ten men.
Barcelona made a lightning start. In the 4th minute, Lamine Yamal opened the scoring, finishing a move created by Ferrán Torres to put the visitors 1–0 up. The second half featured a series of tactical substitutions from both sides. Barcelona replied by adding attacking depth with Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford in the 68th minute, before reinforcing midfield and defence late on through Frenkie de Jong, Roony Bardagji and Ronald Araújo.
Discipline became a storyline in the closing stages. Pablo Gavira received a yellow card for Barcelona in the 69th minute, and Eric García was sent off in the 79th minute, leaving the visitors to defend their narrow lead with ten players. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Barcelona held on.
