Late Pedro Mendes Strike Denies Catanzaro in Four-Goal Serie B Draw with Modena

US Catanzaro were denied all three points at the death as Modena FC 2018 snatched a 2–2 draw thanks to a stoppage-time equaliser from Pedro Mendes in a lively Serie B clash on matchday 31.

The hosts made an ideal start, going ahead after just five minutes. Filippo Pittarello struck early to give Catanzaro a 1–0 lead and set the tone for an open first half. Modena responded before the half-hour mark, drawing level in the 28th minute when defender Davide Adorni converted after being picked out by Matteo Cotali.

Catanzaro restored their advantage in the 40th minute. Fabio Rispoli finished off a move created by Mattia Liberali, sending the home side into the break 2–1 up and seemingly in control.

The match grew more physical around those momentum swings. Tommaso Cassandro and Simone Pontisso both received yellow cards for Catanzaro in the first half, with Fabio Gerli booked for Modena just after the restart.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of an edge. Modena made a key change at half-time, replacing goalscorer Adorni with Daniel Tonoli, and later introduced attacking options including Luca Zanimacchia, Niklas Pyyhtiä and, crucially, Pedro Mendes. Catanzaro responded with a series of substitutions of their own, bringing on Federico Di Francesco among others in an attempt to protect and possibly extend their lead.

Catanzaro held firm until stoppage time, but Modena’s pressure finally told. In the 90th minute plus five, Mendes, on since the 71st minute, found the net to level the score at 2–2 and rescue a valuable away point.
