Last-Gasp Torres Winner Lifts Gimnasia La Plata Past Sarmiento in Junín
Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata snatched a dramatic 2–1 victory over CA Sarmiento de Junín on matchday 14 of the Liga Profesional Apertura, with substitute Franco Torres delivering a stoppage-time winner.
The visitors took the lead shortly before the break. In the 43rd minute, Agustín Auzmendi finished a move created by Alexis Steimbach, whose assist set up the opener to send Gimnasia into half-time 1–0 ahead.
Sarmiento hit back swiftly after the restart. Just five minutes into the second half, Pablo Magnin, brought on in the first half, levelled the match at 1–1. The forward converted following service from Santiago Salle, giving the hosts renewed momentum.
Both coaches turned to their benches throughout a tense second period. Sarmiento were forced into an early change when Cristian Zabala replaced Carlos Villalba after only nine minutes, while Magnin had come on for Jhon Rentería on 32 minutes. Gimnasia introduced fresh legs in midfield and attack, including Mateo Seoane and Maximiliano Zalazar on 63 minutes, before Franco Torres entered in the 77th minute for Marcelo Torres.
The decisive moment arrived at the death. In the 90th minute plus one, Franco Torres made his impact felt, finding the net for Gimnasia. Once again, Steimbach provided the assist, as the visitors reclaimed the lead to seal all three points in Junín.
The match featured several cautions, with yellow cards shown to Ignacio Fernández and Enzo Martínez for Gimnasia, and Cristian Zabala, Manuel Garcia and Thiago Santamaría for Sarmiento. No red cards were recorded.
